When trying out a perspective drawing for beginners, it really helps to start with something that has parallel lines. Whether you use a street, or train tracks, or a boardwalk, it will simplify the job of drawing lines that all appear to point to the same "vanishing" spot.

The best way to get this vanishing point drawing started, is by using a ruler to connect the corners of the paper to the center point, as shown in the tutorial. Anything with a straight edge will do. All that's important is that students make dots about where they want the lines to be, and then connect them with something straight.

The trees are very forgiving shapes to draw, and share a large bunch of leaves. Just point out to the students that the pairs do get smaller, the further they go back. They could make the smaller ones a bit skinnier too.

My experience is that 2-point perspective is best for middle and high school students, but older elementary ones will most likely enjoy this basic one point version. There's nothing like seeing how to make a landscape with some serious space in it just by following this formula.

Materials needed for a Perspective Drawing

Drawing Paper. Don't substitute it with copy paper or construction paper. The surface will get fuzzy, erasing might cause holes, and the colors will generally not look as bright.

Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase.

Ruler. Any generic school brand will work fine.

Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tips.Stabilo Markers. They have the best colors, the best tips, and last the longest.

Black Sharpie Marker. These fine point permanent markers make nice black lines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them in areas with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath for table protection.

Stabilo Markers. The large pack provides lots of fun color choices, several shades of each color, including a few choices for skin. The tips are perfect for coloring, and there's even a promise that they will work after being uncapped for 8 weeks!

Step by Step Directions for a Perspective Drawing

Time needed:1 hour.

How to Draw with Perspective

Draw the horizon line. Use a ruler to draw the boardwalk lines.
Use a ruler again to draw the handrail lines.
Draw the vertical lines on the handrails.
Add two large trees near the front of the drawing.
Draw two medium trees further back.
Add two smaller trees near the back.
Add the leaf lines of the trees and bushes. Draw the lines to the boardwalk.
Trace the drawing with a permanent black marker. Color as shown.
Finish the trees with a layer of orange marker and add brown shadows.
